WILLIAM STEED
William Steed was a
goalkeeper with Ardrossan Celtic
Football Club, joining them early in season 1901-02. He also played at full-back
against Irvine Thistle on 17 May 1902. In August 1903, he joined Vale of Garnock
Strollers. He played in goal for Ardeer Thistle against Vale of Garnock on 5
March 1904.
He was born in Hurlford on 1 May 1879. His parents were Andrew Steed, a labourer
and his wife Eleanor McFadzean. William became an apprentice tailor. On 29 November
1901, William, then a coalminer of Carment Drive, Stevenston, married Agnes
McIntyre Barr, a domestic servant of Kelburne Farm, Largs. Two years earlier,
on 29 December 1899, William's brother Samuel married Agnes's sister, Annie
in Stevenston.
William and Agnes had eight
children - Andrew born in 1902, Robert 1903, James 1906, Agnes 1908, Eleanor
1910, Annie 1915, Margaret 1913 and Catherine 1919. All were born in Stevenston.
William died on 11 January 1947 at Alexander Place, Stevenston.
In Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald reports, William's
surname was repeatedly spelt Stead but his birth, marriage and death certificates
have the spelling Steed.
