Three new Ardrossan teams, Ardrossan Academy, Ardrossan Celtic and Ardrossan Select, probably a scratch team, each played a game in 1896.

ARDROSSAN ACADEMY 3 - SALTCOATS PUBLIC SCHOOL 4
We have received notice of an error which appeared in our columns last week in connection with the game between Ardrossan Academy and Saltcoats Public School (on 29 February 1896) for which we beg to apologise. The result as stated by us was five to two in favour of the Academy but the correct figures as per information to hand were four goals to three in favour of Saltcoats Public School.

ARDROSSAN SELECT 3 - SALTCOATS CALEDONIAN 1
The Saltcoats Caledonian played Ardrossan Select at South Beach on Saturday last (29 March 1896). Select started with the wind behind them and made several tries at the Caledonian goal but without success until nearly half time when they registered two goals shortly after each other. On restarting, the Caledonian made some good attempts but were very unlucky and Select getting away again scored number three. Caledonian again put on the pressure but did not score until just on call of time thus ending a hard game in favour of the Select by three goals to one.
Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald, 3 April 1896
Ardrossan Select may have been a 'one-off' scratch team of locals who challenged Saltcoats Caledonian.

ARDEER RANGERS 2 - ARDROSSAN CELTIC 2
On Saturday (18 April 1890), a match between the Ardeer Rangers and Ardrossan Celtic took place at Stevenston and resulted in a draw, two goals each.

FOOTBALL CLUB STARTING IN ARDROSSAN?
We understand that there are prospects of a football club being again started in Ardrossan. The ground, we believe, has at last been prepared and the lovers of the game in the district feel happy. Several years have elapsed since football was last played in Ardrossan.
Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald, 11 September 1896
The new football club was Ardrossan Castlehill Athletic who played its first game on 9 January 1897 at Montfod Park, Ardrossan. The reference to several years elapsing since football was last played in Ardrossan probably refers to higher level football rather than the occasional games mentioned above.
